Why Seal coat?

  • We are often asked why Soldier Township uses a chip seal process to maintain the township roads. Chip sealing is a process
where the road is coated with emulsified oil, then covered with small rock. This process is used as a
    1. Seal to establish all weather surfaces that are - maintenance free and dust free
    2. Seal to maintain the existing pavement in its present condition by delaying or eliminating further aging due to water and sun.
    3. Seal to change the texture of the road to be non-skid, smoother and uniform in appearance
    4. Seal to change the color by sealing the main pavement for demarcation from the shoulder, of the entire pavement surface and
    to improve light reflection.
    5. Seal to supply minimal additional strength to the pavement
    6. Seal to provide a moisture barrier
    7. Seal to correct existing pavement problems by waterproofing openness, enriching under-asphalted pavement either asphalt,
concrete or seal coats, performing minor leveling, sealing cracks either temporarily or permanently, depending on the cause
    8. Seal for economic reasons
......Chip sealing is significantly less expensive than asphalt paving
......A seal can be less expensive than continual maintenance of a gravel road
......A seal can be an interim step to an asphalt mixed pavement
......A seal can economically prolong the life of an existing pavement

Please drive safely in work zones, obey warning signs and watch out for our crews.
Try to avoid traveling on the road where we are spreading oil. If you ABSOLUTELY must drive on fresh oil because there is no other way to get where you are going:

Drive slowly (5 MPH or less) - the oil is slippery
Expect to get oil on your vehicle - the Township accepts no liability
